Smooth surface helps reducing friction when load chain flows through chain guide because of extra clearance. Chain guide set is a part of hoist which is used to keep the whole load chain within alignment, to prevent chain from becoming tangled.
Chain guide set will hold load chain with load sheave. Without chain guide set, load sheave could be damaged easily.
